How to use the Word Counter

  1. Paste or type text. Counts update automatically.
  2. Choose uppercase, lowercase, title case or sentence case when needed.
  3. Copy or download the current text; Reset clears it and its counts.

Practical example

A 600-word article gives an estimated reading time of 3 minutes at 200 words per minute.

What inputs and outputs are supported?

OutputCounts, reading time at 200 words/minute and case-converted text

Limits, assumptions and troubleshooting

Words are Unicode letter/number groups with internal apostrophes. Character counts use Unicode code points, not visual grapheme clusters; without spaces removes all Unicode whitespace. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Sentences are nonempty segments separated by . ! ? or their CJK equivalents. Abbreviations can inflate sentence counts. Scripts without word spaces, including Chinese and Thai, need language-specific segmentation; these counts are approximate. Reading time excludes images and assumes 200 words per minute.

Frequently asked questions

Is the word counter accurate?

It follows the counting rules documented here. Abbreviations, combining characters and languages without spaces can differ from other counters. Reading time is an estimate.

Can I edit text while counting words?

Yes. Case conversion, slug conversion and space cleanup update the same text and immediately refresh the word count. They do not convert word totals into another measurement.

Do spaces count as characters?

The main character count includes whitespace. The separate count without spaces removes spaces, tabs and line breaks.

Does case conversion preserve meaning?

Case conversion changes letter casing only. Title and sentence case use simple rules; check names, acronyms and language-specific capitalization yourself.
